Congress 2076 Workshop

  • Capitol Visitors Center (map)

About the Event

Join us for the culmination of the Congress 2076 project at an interactive workshop at the US Capitol.

Fifty years ago, Members, staff, and scholars of Congress would not have been able to predict how technological developments like the internet would fundamentally change the way Congress functions. Congress has had to adapt and change to keep pace, giving each generation the opportunity to reimagine the institution and work to bring that vision to life.

What reforms in the next fifty years will allow Congress to continue to adapt to function as a responsive, representative, and effective democratic institution?

Attendees will participate in a workshop facilitated by the Democracy 2076 team and POPVOX Foundation exploring four potential future scenarios for Congress, and discuss with other experts, practitioners, and Congressional staff how submitted ideas for reform could interact to strengthen Congress for the next fifty years and beyond.

For experienced Congress scholars and reformers, this is a chance to step back and take a longer-term perspective, imagining a Congress that few in the Congressional reform community today will be alive to see.

For newcomers and staff interested in the meta-level of how Congress works and can work better, this is an introduction to some of the big ideas on how to fix Congress, and an introduction to some of the tools of long-term future planning.

The event will take place from 1-5 PM at the US Capitol Visitors Center in the South Congressional Meeting Room, and will be followed by a short reception.
