What We're Watching

Upcoming events, toolkits, research, and developments to monitor.

State of the Art is our newsletter to celebrate how America's statehouses are modernizing, whether that takes the form of AI pilots, a new casework system, or updates to internal use policies.

State legislatures face a real capacity paradox. Elected officials are facing the challenges of regulating technologies many have not yet adopted, meeting growing constituent service demands with limited staff, and evaluating increasingly complex policy proposals without the means to assess what peer statehouses have already worked through.

This newsletter is built to support legislators and their staff in closing those capacity gaps.

Each month, we spotlight an innovative approach from a state legislature, share tools being tested and the best practices emerging from them, and look ahead at governance considerations and what's coming next.

State of the Art is written for the people doing the work, not just watching it — legislators, staff, and individuals passionate about strong legislative institutions. It is always nonpartisan, comparative in approach, and educational in spirit.

AI Training for State Legislative Offices

Interested in scheduling a training or learning more? Just fill out this form and we’ll be in touch.

POPVOX Foundation offers free, off-the-record AI trainings designed specifically for state legislative offices:

  • Tool agnostic — training focuses on the basics and best practices of AI use in legislative settings, with a focus on use cases of commercially available LLMs. We cater the content to align with your institution's guidance and do not endorse one tool or platform over another.
  • Taught by former legislative staff who understand your actual workflow and use cases.
  • Your pace, your format — virtual office-wide sessions for capitol and district staff. We meet with teams directly so participants feel comfortable asking questions, digging into actual use cases, and applying what they learn in line with their office's AI use policy.
  • Nonpartisan and honest — POPVOX Foundation is a nonpartisan nonprofit focused on legislative modernization. Our training is transparent and realistic about AI's potential benefits and its risks. Our training focuses on risk mitigation and best practices to foster responsible adoption.
  • Adaptable to your state and chamber guidance on AI use.
  • Customized to your needs — from AI 101 to advanced applications, or tailored by staffer role (communications, policy and legislative, casework, and more).
